2012 Chappellet "Mountain Cuvée" Napa Valley Red Blend

reg $34.99 / $24.99 by the case (6)

Winery Notes:

39% Cabernet Sauvignon 35% Merlot 12% Malbec 8% Petit Verdot 3% Cabernet Franc 3% Syrah

The aromas are rich, ripe and enticing, with sweet fruit layers of plum, bing cherry and cassis, as well as notes of mocha, roasted coffee, cedar and baking spices, all supported by delicious hints of French oak. On the palate, this wine is supple and round, with balanced tannins, weighty texture and a smooth, mouth-filling structure. Though there are abundant ripe red and black fruit flavors, there is also an elegant complexity to this wine that comes from artful blending.

Blended from the traditional Bordeaux varietals, including our own coveted grapes, the Chappellet Mountain Cuvee Proprietor’s Blend builds on our years/decades of experience crafting great Napa County mountain-grown wines. Each component varietal in the cuvée contributes nuances that complement each other. The result is a complex array of aromas and flavors that deliver pure pleasure in a glass. Made for more near-term consumption, this is the wine to choose when you are looking for vivid, mouth-filling fruit flavors.

Great Napa Chardonnay from Chappellet -

20% Less than TOTAL WINE!

Chappellet is something of a forgotten gem in Napa valley.  They have a remarkable track record, and their Pritchard Hill cabernet is one of the top tier wines vintage after vintage.

We had a chance to rediscover them this past week and the first thing I noticed was they had a fantastic Chardonnay – but…It was also being sold directly to Total Wine and they were clearing it through for $34.99.  Not much I could do for them, and I figured this might be why they are sort of forgotten.

A few phone calls from the winery later – and we struck a deal.  They agreed to sell us a big chunk of the amazing 2012 Chardonnay – and at a price that we can offer it to you for 20% LESS THAN OUR PREVIOUS COST!!!  And WAY CHEAPER than Total Wine!

Maybe with this kind of commitment we can all discover Chappellet again.

2012 Chappellet Napa Valley Chardonnay

reg $34.99 / $26.99 by the case (6)

Possessing great definition and ripeness, as well as fresh, lively acidity, this

Chardonnay shows the spectacular quality of the 2012 vintage. The nose is concentrated and effusive, with lovely layers of orange zest, lime, lemon drop, pear, Fuji apple and lychee, all underscored by hints of clove, nutmeg, vanilla and toast from barrel aging in French oak. On the lushly textured palate, favors of lemon custard, ripe peach, apricot, crème fraîche and quince lead to a long, resonating finish.

The majority of the grapes come from Kelly Ranch, which overlooks the San Pablo Bay, where marine influences and shallow soils composed of clay and gravel create optimal growing conditions for Chardonnay. To add depth and complexity, the 2012 vintage also includes fruit from Poe Vineyard in Napa-Carneros and Red Hen Vineyard in Oak Knoll. This wine was aged on its lees for eight months in one-third new French oak barrels. For added texture and viscosity, a signicant portion of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation.

The 2012 growing season featured fantastic growing conditions. Significant rains in early March were followed by perfect weather during bloom and an excellent fruit set. Summer temperatures were also ideal, with alternating periods of fog and sunshine ensuring great hangtime and no significant stress on the vines. With no notable heat events, and no threat of rain, we were able to pick exactly when we wanted to, resulting in pristine, perfectly developed fruit with great balance and acidity.
